In case you were wondering what I was doing today, Bertina told me it was definitely not girly. Meaning, my favorite trainer was going to up the level of challenge today during strength training until I called uncle. So be it.
She innocently started the day with ‘just a traditional forearm plank’. And then when the clock started ticking, she advised me that she was laying barbells on my back. Sweet!
Which was going great until the second minute when she added 7 kilos on top of me.
Then I listened carefully to her as she coached me mentally through the last thirty seconds when my standby methods of staying with the plank were failing me. Bertina knows how to pull out the last 10% of everything I have to finish a goal (this is the 10% she says that I need to learn how to get at whatever I am doing in life).
Today, she wanted to focus on all those areas that build lower body curves. Lots of squats, y’all and the weight class got higher with each set. The steps you see in the picture below are not just to make me feel in the spotlight, but get my free weight to hang lower down to the ground than floor squats will normally allow.
Finally, she swung me around to the coolest section of the gym, where all the weightlifters hang out. She had me work through bar squats on my knees. These are great! From a kneeling position I lowered myself until I was about to sit down on my feet and then back up again. This exercise is really working at the glutes and the backs of the legs. Don’t forget to squeeeeze coming back up!
